Preparing a Skater for USFS Testing and Competition: A Coach’s Perspective
Preparing a student for U.S. Figure Skating (USFS) tests and competitions is about much more than learning jumps and spins. From a coach’s point of view, true success comes from a balanced approach that supports the skater technically, mentally, and emotionally over time. One of the most effective ways to understand this process is through what many coaches call the “Three-Legged Stool” concept: student, parent, and coach working together.
The Student: Effort, Consistency, and Growth
At the center of everything is the skater. Progress in testing and competition requires regular practice, a willingness to be coached, and patience with the learning process. Skills must be developed correctly and repeated consistently so they hold up under pressure—whether during a test session or on competition day. As skaters move from early levels through higher tests, they also learn responsibility, focus, and how to handle both success and setbacks.
The Parent: Support Without Pressure
Parents play a vital supporting role. From a coach’s perspective, the most successful skating families are those who provide encouragement, structure, and trust. This includes getting skaters to practice, communicating openly with the coach, and allowing the process to unfold at the right pace. Testing and competition can feel emotional, especially for young skaters, and calm, positive support from parents helps children build confidence and resilience.
The Coach: Planning, Preparation, and Perspective
The coach’s role is to guide the journey with experience and intention. This includes selecting the right time for tests, choosing appropriate competition levels, and ensuring that skills are truly ready—not rushed. Coaches focus on long-term development, making sure strong fundamentals are in place so skaters can advance safely and confidently. Thoughtful choreography, music selection, and practice strategies all play a part in preparing skaters to perform their best.
Bringing It All Together
When the student is committed, the parent is supportive, and the coach provides clear direction, the three legs of the stool are strong—and the skater is set up for success. USFS testing and competition are milestones along a much bigger journey, one that builds not only skating skills, but confidence, discipline, and a lifelong love for the sport.
With the right team in place, skaters can grow step by step—from their first test to confident performances on the ice—knowing they are fully supported every glide of the way.
